Mobile gaming is something that I’m still learning to adjust to, especially since I put the Google Play store on my Fire tablet in July. Not only did I have more games to choose from than in the Amazon app store, but I also found myself exposed to more in-game ads, in-app purchases, and a lack of offline games.

Although mobile gaming annoys me sometimes, the offline role playing games I’ve enjoyed have made the experience bearable and fun. Here are my top five mobile RPG games that I’ve played.

1. Witch Spring 2

In this game, you play as a deity named Luna cast out and labeled a witch by human warriors. You train her, make new spells, and gain new pet creatures to help her survive as she tries to solve the mystery of the rift between humans and deities. The graphics are cute, the battle system is interesting, and the storyline is really heartwarming, especially if you complete the sub-quests as well as the main storyline.

2.  Knight of the Earthends

I’ve discussed Kemco games on here before and they are a good way to get your RPG fix without breaking the bank. Knight of The Earthends is my favorite Kemco game for a few reasons. The rarity of a female lead heroine in a JRPG made me treasure Reiya (the game’s stoic, heroic knight) a lot.

Another reason is that I enjoyed the battle system, which lets you chain different attacks together to make combos. Finally, I liked how Yunika (the game’s other female lead) had the ability to learn the ability of monsters you encounter. It made her cute yet totally kick butt at the same time.

In fact, this game’s only flaws was a glitch that made the game freeze up at times and the cheesiness of the storyline. Since I figured out how to play despite the glitch & didn’t mind the storyline too much, this game still managed to be enjoyable.

3. Final Fantasy VI

The Final Fantasy franchise is one of a few console RPG franchises getting the mobile port treatment. I was lucky enough to buy this particular game half off during last year’s holiday season. Although it is a very long and sometimes frustrating experience, the game’s characters, beautiful soundtrack, and thought provoking storyline made it all worth it.

4. Mage Gauntlet

If Link from the Legend of Zelda game franchise were a female mage in training, then you’d have this game. Spellcasters are my favorite character class to play in RPGs, so to have a protagonist and battle system based on one is heaven to me. In this game, you collect magic spells from your surroundings and use them strategically to fight monsters. Unlike many games, you can’t just fire spells willy-nilly; once you use up your spells, you’re out until you can find more of them.

5. Eternium: Mages and Minions

Although I’m still new to hack-n-slash RPGs (i.e. RPGs where you do nothing but fight monsters and level up), Eternium is a decent experience for mobile gamers. You play as a warrior, mage, or bounty hunter fighting monsters on various worlds, leveling up, and customizing your weapons and armor.

This game has great graphics, really simple touch controls that make it easy to play, & it can also be played offline after the game has completely downloaded.  The only reason I don’t really love this game is because the gameplay gets boring after a while because all the levels & monsters feel the same & the abilities outside of the mage class are lackluster.
