October is Black Speculative Fiction Month, which celebrates Black sci-fi and fantasy creators in books, film, comic books, and more. I’ve written about Black Sci-fi and fantasy for four years now, mostly over at the site Black Sci-fi.
To celebrate Black Speculative Fiction Month and 4 years of loving Black speculative fiction, here are a few of my favorite pieces I’ve written.
Review: Adorned By Chi issues 1 & 2– My newest Black Sci-fi piece in a while discusses Jacque Aye’s Nigerian magical girl comic book series Adorned By Chi. Inspired by Japanese manga & Igbo culture, this is a cute, fun addition to Black magical girl works.
The Fiyah This Time: An Interview With Fiyah Lit magazine– Interviewing the main editors of the Black speculative fiction mag FIYAH was exciting b/c I got to learn about their goals and their love of stories when the mag was brand new. This interview makes their current success and my getting published in the magazine so much sweeter.
Review: Life On Mars– This book was the first book of speculative poetry I ever read and to learn that book was written by a Black woman who won the Pulitzer Prize was really awe inspiring. This book showed me that poetry could contain my imagination in verse & got me interested in reading more speculative poetry and writing it.
Review: Aurion Legacy of The Kori Odan– Although I haven’t written much about video games, reviewing an African fantasy RPG like Aurion Legacy of The Kori Odan was delightful. The game isn’t perfect, but it’s a breath of fresh air for those tired of the same old RPG games.
Top Ten Books For Black Speculative Fiction Newbies– I made this list so that no Black reader would have to do an endless Google search for Black sci-fi and fantasy books like I once did. If you’ve ever wanted to start reading Black SFF, this list is Blacktastic.
