Six years ago this May, I was a college student and an editorial intern at the Black women’s culture website For Harriet. It was here that I started writing my first online articles on pop culture and entertainment.
Since then, I not only get paid to write, but have written a plenthora of features and reviews on topics such as but not limited to: indie Black music artists, Japanese anime, comic books, young adult fiction, adult sci-fi and fantasy fiction, and gaming. Not to mention race and its intersections with gender, gender identity, and orientation.
I listed those subjects because sometimes I just don’t give myself enough flowers as a freelance contributor. I’ve definitely had my ups and downs and the current pandemic has been a major downer for myself and other freelance writers. There’s also been changes, such as moving from Patreon to Ko-fi for blogging and cash tips.
Even though I’m not quite where I want to be as a freelance contributor, I still want to acknowledge and celebrate my progress. Compared to a decade ago, I couldn’t dream of seeing myself getting paid to write about things that I enjoy and have critiques about.
To celebrate the six years I’ve been writing, I’m resharing six of my favorite pieces I’ve written over the years.
