2022 was very long and mentally draining sometimes, but at least I wrote some fantastic freelance pop culture pieces. This year, I continued writing for Fandom and Into More and also wrote for new sites such as Popverse and Comics XF. I’m very proud of my progress and wanted to look back at some of my work this year.
Why Jem and The Holograms Deserves A New Animated Adaptation– For Into More, I wrote a piece on why the truly outrageous 80’s franchise deserves to be rebooted in a way that combines the glamour of the classic animated series with the modern touches of the recent IDW comic book series.
Bytchcraft Is A Love Letter To Blackness and Magic– For Comics XF, I wrote about the indie webcomic on Webtoon, Bytchcraft, which ended up being one of my favorite comics I’ve read this year.
12 Black Sci-fi Fantasy Comics To Read- For Polygon, I wrote about sci-fi and fantasy comics by Black creators everyone should check out. This is my first comic book related piece for a major pop culture website.
How 3DS RPGs Taught Me To Savor Adventure– For The Outerhaven, I wrote about how some of the JRPGS released on the Nintendo 3DS helped me enjoy the adventure of the games at a slower pace. Given how support for the 3DS gradually pulled back this year, this ended up being one of the best swan songs I’ve written for the gaming system.
Persona Q2 Taught Me To Value My Creativity– For The Gamer, I wrote about the personal impact of the 2019 3DS game Persona Q2 New Cinema Labyrinth. This game really made my summer special and I was happy to be able to write about it.
Comics XF is Addicted To Marvel Snap, Here’s Why– The mobile card game Marvel Snap ended up being such a delight for my colleagues and I over at Comics XF. As a result, I decided to put together a roundtable piece discussing the merits and flaws of the game.
Inside The Never Before Seen 90’s Sailor Moon anime/live action hybrid– For Popverse, I wrote about the kooky 90’s Sailor Moon pilot that was unearthed this year by Youtuber and digital archivist Ray Mona.
In The Name of The Queer: Sailor Moon’s LGBTQ Legacy– Sailor Moon turned 30 this year so I had a lot to say about the anime franchise. One of the pieces I wrote about it focused on its LGBTQ themes and its impact on LGBTQ fans and creators.
6 Anime Influenced By Revolutionary Girl Utena– The classic anime series Revolutionary Girl Utena turned 25 this year, so of course I had to write about the anime’s legacy. For Fandom, I discussed six anime series influenced by Utena.
